Catholic Charities West Virginia and their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Outreach Program (SNAP) are grateful to the Walmart Foundation for their generous grant, facilitated via Catholic Charities USA. During the fiscal year 2024, The Walmart Foundation contributed $41,000 to support their local SNAP outreach and enrollment efforts, advancing their mission of aiding West Virginia’s most vulnerable residents. They also extend appreciation to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) for their ongoing grant support, totaling $125,539 through the USDA‘s Food and Nutrition Services program.
Food insecurity affects over 256,000 West Virginians, approximately one in seven residents, spanning across all age groups. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) serves as a vital safety net, reaching out to those in our community facing food insecurity. SNAP offers food benefits to both individuals and families, aiding them in supplementing their grocery budget during times of financial instability.
Our dedication to ensuring access to nutritious food remains unwavering. This commitment is exemplified through the SNAP Outreach initiative administered by Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa), which assists individuals in determining their eligibility for SNAP benefits and guides them through the application process.
Mary Ann, a newly widowed woman, is just one kind soul whom we have helped. After losing her husband, Charles, Mary Ann was left with no income which made it impossible to provide both for herself and others in need. She and her husband spent many of their years serving others in the form of helping their neighbors.
Following Charles’ passing, Mary Ann discovered her pantry and fridge nearly empty. Despite her compassionate neighbors delivering groceries, the need for sustenance persisted. Upon a friend’s recommendation, Mary Ann contacted our SNAP Outreach Program, received support with the application process, and is now enrolled in SNAP.
Numerous stories similar to Mary Ann’s highlight the importance of the SNAP program. Without the generous backing of donors and supporters such as The Walmart Foundation and the WVDHHR, many of these stories might go untold. Once again, sincere appreciation is expressed for their significant contributions to the program.
