Jumping for Summer Joy: A Day of Family Fun

While summer often means relaxation or vacations for many, some families face a different reality.

“Many parents in our Relatives as Parents Program cannot afford family trips,” said Diana Bell, Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa) Assistant Chief Program Officer. “For some, even going out to dinner is not possible. Each year, we strive to host at least one fun event for them.”

CCWVa’s Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) supports families where caregivers other than the biological parents are raising children. This often involves grandparents, aunts, or uncles stepping in when biological parents are unable to care for their children.

RAPP offers various supports and interventions for these families, providing caregivers with the resources they need to be informed, effective, and responsible parents.

“Most of our families are caring for two or more foster children, with one family even having five foster kids,” said Bell. “It’s almost impossible for them to do anything extra with all the challenges they face.”

Each year, RAPP organizes a fun outing for the families. These families often struggle with other concerns and can’t always provide recreational activities for the children. This year’s trip to Urban Air in Pittsburgh was a highlight for the families. At the end of the day, most of the kids didn’t want to leave because they were having such a great time. One mom remarked, “The kids had so much fun! Thank you so much for providing this wonderful day.”

Every year, this program offers support and opportunities for families navigating difficult situations. “By taking them on this outing, Catholic Charities gives them a chance to relax and be a family having fun together,” Bell added. “We try to provide at least one experience where everyone can forget about some of the negatives and just be parents enjoying the day with their children.”
