SNAP Outreach: Helping Families Put Food on the Table

As our Outreach office was preparing to close for the evening before Thanksgiving, an older couple approached with their young grandson. Their faces showed worry and exhaustion. They had been caring for him for months, doing their best to provide a stable home, but their fixed income was stretched thin. While many families were planning holiday meals, their concern was much more immediate—they weren’t sure if they could afford a turkey, let alone a full Thanksgiving dinner.

Recognizing their distress, our team immediately stepped in. We prescreened them for SNAP benefits, walking them through the application process and ensuring they had the resources they needed. As they realized that help was available, their expressions softened, and relief replaced their anxiety. The grandmother, holding back tears, shared, “I’m a little more hopeful now about Christmas dinner.”

At Catholic Charities West Virginia, we believe no one should have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. Whether it’s a warm meal, access to resources, or a listening ear, we are committed to helping individuals and families find stability and hope. This moment was a powerful reminder that even the smallest act of kindness—whether offering assistance, a compassionate conversation, or simply showing up for those in need—can bring comfort and reassurance.

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to serving our neighbors with dignity and compassion. Because when we come together as a community, no one has to face hardship alone.
