From Ruin to Restoration: Mark’s Journey

On September 27, 2024, the winds of Hurricane Helene swept through Mercer County, leaving behind a trail of destruction—and a call to compassion. For Mark, whose home of more than 30 years was struck by a falling tree, the storm marked the beginning of a long and uncertain road to recovery.

What began with homeowner’s insurance and FEMA assistance soon turned into a much bigger challenge when Mark learned his entire home would need to be rewired due to water damage. Overwhelmed but determined, he reached out for help—and found a lifeline through Catholic Charities West Virginia.

Lora Pierce, our Disaster Services Specialist, walked alongside Mark every step of the way. “Disaster recovery is a long process,” Lora shared. “We walk with people for as long as it takes.”

Over the course of nearly seven months, Catholic Charities helped Mark connect with trusted contractors, secure vital funding, and—most importantly—offered him the compassionate support that reminded him he wasn’t alone.

“They really stuck their neck out to make it possible for me to get my kitchen fixed,” Mark said with gratitude. His joyful update came in a heartfelt text to Lora:
The stove is in and my kitchen is complete. Thanks to you wonderful and blessed people for loving and caring and taking time to help people in need.”

Now back to cooking in his fully restored kitchen, Mark is filled with hope—and a renewed sense of purpose. Inspired by the care he received, he’s eager to support and give back to Catholic Charities’ Disaster Services; ready to bring that same light and healing to others walking through their own storms.
