For Mr. B., home is more than a place to live. Tucked into the hills of Wyoming County, it is a reflection of his family’s history, sacrifice, and love.
Originally built in 1975 by his uncle as a small store, the structure was later transformed into a home through the hard work and dedication of his family. Years later, Mr. B. made it his own, carefully purchasing it over time and paying it off in full through steady determination. Every wall and every room carries meaning. It is a place he fought for and deeply cherishes.
But in September 2024, everything changed. When the remnants of Hurricane Helene swept through the region, high winds tore into Mr. B.’s roof. Without homeowners’ insurance and living on a limited income, he had no way to make the repairs. Because the county did not receive a federal disaster declaration, resources were scarce.
As weeks turned into months, the damage worsened. Rain continued to seep into his home. Ceilings began to stain and weaken. Mold spread. With each storm, fear grew. He worried that the next heavy rain might cause the roof to give way completely.
In August 2025, Catholic Charities West Virginia began disaster case management in the area. Through outreach efforts, Mr. B. was connected with a case manager who listened to his story and worked quickly to help.
The first step was simple but critical. A tarp was secured over the damaged roof, stopping the immediate intrusion of water and preventing further harm. For the first time in months, there was a sense of relief.

Soon after, with support from a grant and the coordination of Catholic Charities, Mr. B. received something he never thought possible. His roof was fully replaced. The transformation was immediate. The leaks stopped. The mold no longer spread. The home that once felt at risk of collapse became stable again. Even the temperature inside improved, bringing comfort and easing the strain on his health and utility costs.
Mr. B. expressed his gratitude with deep emotion, “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am beyond blessed. I believe God sent you to help me. I was afraid my home was going to be condemned. If it were not for Catholic Charities, my home would have hit the ground. Now it’s warm, it’s safe, and it’s no longer leaking. I am so thankful.”
Today, Mr. B. remains in the home he worked so hard to keep. While a few needs remain, including repairing broken windows, he now faces the future with stability and hope. Because of compassionate support, what was once a crisis became a moment of restoration.
At Catholic Charities West Virginia, this is the heart of the mission: walking alongside our neighbors in their most difficult moments and helping them rebuild not just their homes, but their sense of security, dignity, and hope.
