Last December, after the government shutdown, a grandmother raising her four grandchildren came to the Kingwood Food Pantry looking for help. Like many grandparents who unexpectedly become caregivers, she was doing everything she could to keep life as normal as possible for the children in her care.
The pantry was able to provide food, but the support did not stop there. She was connected with the Dollar Energy Fund, which paid a large portion of her electric bill and relieved some of the financial pressure her family was facing. She was also referred to the Preston County Grandfamilies support group, where grandparents raising grandchildren can find free classes, encouragement, and practical resources. The program offers help with food, clothing, utilities, housing, and other basic needs.
Sometimes all it takes is one connection to change the direction of a family’s story. What began as a visit for groceries became a path to lasting support and a reminder that no one has to face life’s challenges alone. Because of caring neighbors and strong community partnerships, this grandmother and her grandchildren found more than assistance. They found people who believed in them and were ready to help them move forward.
