Appreciation Luncheon Held for Southern Region Volunteers

By Matt Atwood, Southern Region Director

A group of individuals who selflessly volunteer their time and talents in the Southern Region of Catholic Charities West Virginia were honored with an appreciation luncheon on Tuesday, July 17.

Matt Atwood, Southern Region Director, Nancy Blankenship, Southern Region Program Assistant, and Mary Kelly, SNAP Outreach Specialist in the Southern Region joined 11 volunteers for a delicious Italian meal at a local restaurant. Volunteers from different offices had the opportunity to meet and everyone enjoyed a time of fellowship.

The Southern Region’s Beckley Outreach is staffed solely by volunteers from the St. Francis de Sales Parish in Beckley. The office’s primary service is helping clients pay utility termination notices and evictions. The compassionate group of volunteers work with clients to complete applications and gather the necessary verifications. The goal of these efforts is to help those who are struggling meet their basic needs such as heat, water, and shelter.  The program receives regular donations from St. Francis de Sales and recently received a grant from the Beckley Area Foundation.

Volunteers at Loaves and Fishes Outreach in Hinton and the Webster Springs Outreach assist with serving clients at the food pantry, staffing the thrift store, and doing pickups and deliveries. Both offices rely strongly on volunteer support.

“I appreciate each and every one of our volunteers,” said Matt Atwood, “We couldn’t do what we do without them.”
